The Class Environmental Assessment Process for Group 'B' Projects

Text description of diagram

Overview

The diagram depicts the Class Environmental Assessment Process for Group “B” projects, listing the overall stages of the process and detailing the steps and outputs of the Detailed Design stage along a timeline.

Values

The six stages of the process are listed as:

  1. Public Consultation
  2. Ongoing Transportation Needs Assessment
  3. Need Identified
  4. Preliminary Design
  5. Detailed Design
  6. Construction

The timeline is titled “Detailed Design within the Environmental Assessment Process.”

The steps and outputs along the timeline are in order from left to right and titled:

  1. Data Collection
  2. Notifications and Project Website
  3. Evaluate and Refine
  4. Identify
  5. Finalize
  6. Report
  7. Design and Construction Report
  8. Clearance

Each of these steps and outputs include a description, detailed below.

Data Collection

Review available background information and conduct field investigations as required to update or confirm existing conditions identified during the previous study.

Notifications and Project Website

Spring 2022 and onward

Evaluate and Refine

Evaluate options for construction staging and traffic management. Consider potential design refinements to the Preferred Plan developed during the previous study.

Identify

Identify the Technically Preferred Plan. Identify mitigation measures to address potential impacts.

Finalize

Complete Detailed Design of the Technically Preferred Plan to an implementation level of detail.

Report

Document the process leading to the Technically Preferred Plan.

Design and Construction Report

(Available for a 30-day Public Review Period). January 2023.

Clearance

The Class EA requirements are met and the project is cleared to proceed to construction.

Presentation

The six stages are listed horizontally. The name of each stage is inside a chevron arrow shape pointing to the left.

A vertical arrow pointing upward and the words “We are here” are placed under “Construction.”

A circular arrow icon next to “Ongoing Transportation Needs Assessment” emphasizes that it is repeated throughout the process.

Below the five stages of the process is a timeline, titled “Detailed Design within the Environmental Assessment Process” that details the steps and outputs of the “Detailed Design” stage. This timeline is inside a box with a triangle that points to “Construction” in the list of stages.

These steps and outputs are depicted at various intervals along a left-pointing arrow.

“Data Collection,” “Evaluate and Refine,” “Identify,” “Finalize,” and “Report” are all depicted at equal intervals along the arrow. The space between “Report” and “Clearance” is slightly shorter than the space between the other steps. These steps all branch upwards from the arrow.

“Notifications and Project Website” is depicted shortly after “Data Collection,” implying that this is the output of the “Data Collection” step. “Design and Construction Report” is depicted shortly after “Report,” implying that this is the output of the “Report” step. These outputs branch downwards from the arrow, visually setting them apart from the steps.
